The Duomo of Florence, 153 meters long, is the fourth biggest cathedral in

The body of the cathedral of Florence has a plant made in one single part, with three naves, that goes in one enourmous circle where is built the biggest dome of the world, the Brunelleschi Dome. The Duomo of Florence, named Santa Maria del Fiore, was built, over the ancient church of Santa Reparata, from 1296 to 1436, when it was consacrated by Pope Eugenio IV.
The original project of the Florence Duomo was made by Arnolfo di Cambio that worked on the construction of till his death, then the work was continued, with extensions and modifications, by Giotto, Francesco Talenti, Giovanni Lapo di Ghini.
The original facade of the florence Duomo was made by several artists, among them Andreo Orcagna and Taddeo Gaddi, and was completed only in the lower part and let unfinished. In the years 1587 - 1588 the original lower part was dismantled by Bernardo Buontalenti, the architect of the Medici court (that was architect of the palace of the Paris Hotel too), because outmoded in Reinassaince times, and not rebuilt because of a huge scandal (the model of the project is now displayed in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo). Finally from 1876 - 1887 was built the actual facade, in neo-ghotic style with white, green and red marbles. The facade was dedicated to the Mother of Crist, which is dedicate the cathedral too.
