Sightseeing in Florence: the Cathedral |
The Duomo
of Florence, 153 meters long, is the fourth biggest church in
Europe, after San Pietro (Rome), Saint Paul (London) and the Duomo of
Milan.
The body of the cathedral of Florence has a plant made in one single
part, with three naves, that goes in one enourmous circle where is built
the biggest dome of the world, the Brunelleschi Dome. The Duomo of Florence,
named Santa Maria del Fiore, was built, over the ancient church
of Santa Reparata, from 1296 to 1436, when it was consacrated by Pope
Eugenio IV. The original project was made by Arnolfo di Cambio that
worked to the construction till his death, then the work was continued,
with extensions and modifications, by Giotto, Francesco Talenti, Giovanni
Lapo di Ghini.
