The history of the Historic centre, that was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1982, began as settlement established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC for his veteran soldiers.
The "golden age" of the city was in the reinaissance, under the leadership of the Medici family, during this period, from the 14th to the 16th century there was a amazing developement of arts, science, architecture and so on.
